This article continues our series exploring Windows 8 and SkyDrive. Read the previous article here.

Apple iCloud Contacts

As always, Microsoft and Apple do  not see eye to eye, so despite the simplicity of linking & syncing with other accounts, your iCloud account will be ever so slightly trickier…

It is not possible to synchronise your Contacts on iCloud with People on SkyDrive, so a one-time transfer is the only option, nowhere else have we found the solution detailed below, despite reading the whole Interweb on this one  😉 …

Transferring iCloud Contacts

There are four stages to this process, but first you must create a Google account if you do not already have one.

Export the Contacts from iCloud
Import the Contacts into Google Contacts

TOP TIP
If you plan to sync your Google contacts with Outlook.com, you can stop here, and merge your Contacts in Google

Export the Contacts from Google Contacts
Import the Contacts into SkyDrive People

Export Contacts from iCloud

  1. Launch Contacts from the iCloud home screen
  2. Click the settings wheel at bottom left > Select all
  3. Click the settings wheel at bottom left > Export vCard
  4. Navigate to the downloaded file* and move it onto your desktop

*Look in C:\Users\YourUsername\Downloads

Import the Contacts into Google Contacts

  1. Launch Gmail from the Google home page (ribbon at the top)
  2. Click the Gmail dropdown at the left > Contacts
  3. Click Import Contacts…
  4. Choose the Contacts file on your desktop (VCF format) & import

Export the Contacts from Google Contacts

  1. In Google Contacts, type ‘Imported’ into the search box to find the imported Contacts
  2. Selection dropdown > All
  3. More > Export > Outlook CSV format
  4. Navigate to the downloaded file and move it onto your desktop

Import the Contacts into SkyDrive

  1. Launch People from the SkyDrive home screen
  2. Click ‘Import from file’
  3. Choose the Contacts file on your desktop (CSV format) & import

TOP TIP
If the ‘Add people…’ panel is missing from your People screen, try
Manage (in ribbon) > Add people > Import from File > Microsoft Outlook

Of course, it is possible to transfer your contacts using more traditional methods:
1. export your iCloud Contacts…
2. convert the vCard file to CSV (using an online tool)…
2a. realise you used the wrong tool…find the right tool…
3. mess about with the header so as to be acceptable to SkyDrive (or use the painful field mapping facility in Outlook 2010/2013)
3a. realise you need to rematch the fields…make a cuppa…
4. try again with learned knowledge

and there you have it…not a pleasant experience.

Two of our next articles will cover syncing your Calendars with Outlook.com, and adding Outlook.com to your iPhone

All methods are accurate at the time of writing for the configuration tested: Office 2010 on Windows 7; Chrome  v27; iPad 1; Nokia Lumia 710.
